Yahoo Sports is getting in on the subscription model for sports coverage online. The site will cover teams with writers and video services. According to Andrew Marchand of The New York Post, the first site will focus on the Mets and launches in March.
The Mets and Yahoo have signed a three year deal. Neither side would comment on the financial details.
The site will be called The Queens Baseball Club. Yahoo says a subscription will cost $4.99 or $5.99 per month.
In addition to the three writers hired to cover the club, subscribers will also get access to exclusive video content. This includes batting practice, front office Q&A sessions, and various press conferences.
Each team site Yahoo creates will hire a beat reporter, a backup beat reporter, and a columnist. Wallace Matthews, formerly of the New York Daily News, has signed on as the columnist for the Mets’ site.
