Mike Tirico has covered nearly every sport NBC has television rights to since he came left ESPN in 2016. While his most high profile play-by-play job for the Peacock Network has been the NFL’s Thursday Night Football package in 2017 and Notre Dame football games, Tirico has served as a studio host for the Olympics, multiple golf events, horse racing’s Triple Crown, and some of the marquee events on the NHL schedule.
The next time Tirico covers the NHL for NBC, he will be a little closer to the action. The network announced yesterday that he will call play-by-play of the Chicago Blackhawks’ visit to Detroit on February 20.
For a guy that has already called virtually every sport under the sun, this will actually be a first for the 52-year-old.
“I’m thrilled to be calling my first NHL game,” Tirico said in a press release. “Growing up in New York, and now living in metro Detroit, I’ve always loved the sport of hockey as a fan, attending as many games as possible each season. So the chance to call a game is a bucket list item for me.”
Tirico will be paired with Eddie Olczyk in the booth. Brian Boucher will be the game’s “Inside The Glass” analyst. Tirico says he will be “in good hands” working with them.
