“We want to be a leader in the large events and we really felt there was an opportunity with Thursday Night Football,” declared Fox Sports President Mark Silverman in a sit down with John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal.
Silverman is referencing his company’s commitment to TNF after the weekday game floated around CBS, NBC and the NFL Network for years. With a consistent home in Fox, TNF has certainly enjoyed more viewership – thanks in no small part to better games.
In order to make sure they continue to schedule marquee games on Thursday, Silverman is prepared to take half a step back in what matchups get featured on the network’s America’s Game of the Week broadcast on Sundays.
“As long as that Game of the Week is still able to hold that mantle,” Silverman continued, “we were comfortable with losing a tenth or couple tenths of a ratings point on Sunday to make sure Thursday night is as popular and as important as we all are putting in the effort to do.”
