Cumulus and the Oklahoma City Thunder agreed to a multi-year extension to keep 98.1FM WWLS The Sports Animal as the team’s flagship radio station.
“The Thunder is a part of the Sports Animal DNA,” said Cumulus vice president and market manager, Jay Davis. “We are as excited to be a part of the Thunder’s 11th season, as we were the inaugural year.”
While 98.1 The Sports Animal remains the team’s flagship station, a collection of radio stations throughout the state carry Thunder games to make up the Thunder Radio Network, including The Sports Animal Tulsa. The new agreement will also see WKY 930-AM (ESPN Deportes) continue to broadcast Thunder games in Spanish.
“The Sports Animal has been a tremendous and loyal partner since our inception in Oklahoma City in 2008. The station’s strong listener base and powerful reach have made it the ideal radio partner,” said Dan Mahoney, the Thunder’s vice president of broadcasting.
Play-by-play announcer, Matt Pinto, will return to the broadcast for his 11th season, having served as the voice of the Thunder since the franchise’s first season in Oklahoma City in 2008. Pinto will also continue to host the weekly radio show, Thunder Full Court Press on The Sports Animal. Eleno Ornelas will return to the radio booth to provide play-by-play on 930-AM, ESPN Deportes.
The first game under their new contract will be on October 3rd as the Thunder tip-off their preseason schedule against the Detroit Pistons.
