Sports radio stations in Philadelphia and Chicago spent much of the week discussing Sunday’s “Double Doink” game. After the Eagles advanced to the Divisional Round of the playoffs on Bears kicker Cody Parkey’s missed late game field goal, it didn’t take long for a radio station to turn the kick into a promotional event.
On Friday, Philadelphia’s WPEN 97.5 The Fanatic created the “Philly Pretzel Factory $10,000 Double Doink Challenge.” During The Fanatic’s morning show hosted by Marc Farzetta and Tra Thomas, fans were given the opportunity to recreate the now famous Double Doink kick (infamous in Chicago) to win a $10,000 prize.
Hitting the upright, followed by the crossbar only to have the football bounce forward was unlikely last Sunday in an NFL game, making the $10,000 radio promotion no easy task. The promotion did not take place in the studio, Friday’s Farzetta and Tra in the Morning was broadcasting from the XFINITY Live! complex in South Philadelphia.
