The Athletic moved on from several MLS beat writers last week, and followed the move with a statement saying “We have heard the concerns that subscribers have about changes to our coverage. We have a big announcement on the way, one that the whole company is very excited about. We’ll be sharing that update very soon.”
That move was doubling the full-time soccer staff. The Athletic’s George Quraishi announced Monday “dozens” of freelance writers will be joining Felipe Cardenas, Pablo Maurer, Matt Pentz, Jeff Rueter and Sam Stejskal plus Megan Linehan who will focus on women’s soccer.
Paul Tenorio, Alexander Abnos and Brooks Peck still remain on staff.
Many fans vocalized their displeasure of the move, seeing it as counterproductive and a shift from local beat coverage to a regional approach. Tenorio responded to a few backlash tweets from subscribers to clear up the changes.
