CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV combined for an average 6.0 overnight rating – locking up the second highest opening Thursday since 1991.

The day certainly did come with it’s fair share of blowouts, including Gonzaga’s 87-49 slaughtering of Fairleigh Dickson, but the committee did luck out with some compelling basketball during all time slots.  There were upset scares all day long drawing people to a TV, and just enough to hold their attention.

CBS also announced via Twitter that official NCAA tournament social platforms saw a 72% increase over last year.

Turner, CBS and the NCAA hope work productivity continues to slow throughout Friday as ACC heavy weight 1 seeds Duke, North Carolina and Virginia will all take the floor.  There’s also a number of intriguing power conference match-ups (Oregon-Wisconsin, Ohio State-Iowa State) set to tip off as well.
