After Michigan football’s disappointing and season derailing loss to Ohio State last weekend, the Big Drew & Jim show on 96.1 ESPN in Grand Rapids questioned if star defensive end, Rashan Gary was overrated.
96.1 hosts Drew McCarthy and Jim Costa hoped to promote thought and conversation with the segment, but didn’t expect it to come from Gary’s mom, Jennifer Coney-Shepherd who called the show to defend her son.
“Maybe you guys don’t understand football,” Coney-Shepherd told Drew and Jim. “That’s what I think. You don’t understand football, and you’re talking about schemes here.” Coney-Shepherd continued, explaining to the hosts that Michigan’s defensive coordinator Don Brown’s schemes don’t set Gary up for statistical success.
This was not the first time Gary was publicly defended by his mother. In October, Coney-Shepherd took to The Winged Helmet Facebook page to clarify Gary’s injury and explain why the star defensive end was sidelined at the time.
Coney-Shepherd ended the radio segment on good terms with Costa and McCarthy by exchanging thanks and pleasantries. The Big Drew and Jim show broadcasts weekdays from 3 – 6pm on the iHeartMedia owned 96.1 ESPN.
