Sunderland Association Football Club, or “SAFC” as it is known to fans of British soccer, plays in the second tier of the country’s soccer pyramid. It will be at the center of a new unscripted series on Netflix the company announced today. The show is called Sunderland Till I Die.
The announcement was made during Netflix’s presentation at the Edinburgh TV Festival. The company says it was drawn to the project because of the economic struggles of the city of Sunderland and its shipping and mining industry. Those struggles have made the team a more important part of the locals’ identity. “In the era of multi-million dollar sponsorship deals and transfers, where the stakes have never been higher or the rivalries more fierce, this brand new Netflix original series sets at its heart the unfailing passion of this U.K. Northern town.”
No premier date has been set yet for Sunderland Till I Die. It was one of five new unscripted series announced by Netflix in its presentation.
