While NBCSN’s coverage of the Firestone Grand Prix in St. Petersberg started great, technical difficulties eventually wrecked the broadcast.
On lap 62 during a picture-in-picture commercial break, the box with the race feed cut to black. Naturally, the production truck opted to take the commercial box full while they tried to troubleshoot the issue. Once they understood it would be a while, the decision to go audio only was made.
After 13 minutes and 13 laps of Leigh Diffey, Townsend Bell and Paul Tracy providing radio coverage for the television broadcast, a picture returned. During the trouble, Diffey apologized for “transmission and technical issues.”
Joseph Newgarden won the race – and it’s safe to say NBC lost the telecast.
