Rickie Fowler’s 64 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open Saturday was 2nd fiddle to the attention received by Johnny Miller. NBC honored Miller’s 29 year career as a golf analyst by allowing his peers to pay him tribute throughout the broadcast.
The decision to make Saturday Miller’s final call and not the final round certainly allowed the network and production team ample time to celebrate one of faces of NBC Sports.
Almost all of Miller’s colleagues cited his brutal honesty as they said goodbye.
“I spent 19 years at CBS listening to you as did the rest of my colleagues over there. Quite often I found myself thinking, ‘what did he just say? Really?’ explained David Feherty Saturday. “A few moments after I would think, ‘I wish I had said that.'”
Miller, who was getting choked up at times listening to kind words all afternoon, had the following to say about the broadcast; “This is one heck of a song, even if it is all about me.”
