According to a report from Awful Announcing, Jay Mariotti has written his final column for the San Francisco Examiner. The talented and polarizing columnist joined the Examiner last March and was tasked with bringing his strong opinionated columns to the publisher’s sports section and helping lead the group into the new age of sports media. Upon hiring Mariotti, the Examiner said they were “thrilled to bring in one of the best sports writers in the nation.”
To his credit, Jay kept a low profile during his Bay Area stay and kept his focus on covering the market’s sports scene. Michael Howerton of the Examiner told Joe Eskenazi of San Francisco Magazine that the two sides had parted ways and the split wasn’t a spur of the moment decision. The Examiner has since named Jacob Palmer its new sports editor.
Meanwhile, Mariotti sent out a tweet earlier today addressing the matter and says that an agreement to part ways was reached in February and he’s since accepted a new media deal.
Many in the media have taken aim at Mariotti for his previous personal issues, and while each person is entitled to their opinion, there’s few who will deny that Mariotti is a talented wordsmith. When news emerges about Jay’s next venture we’ll pass it along to you.
