John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal reports that ESPN will shut down its magazine in September.
ESPN The Magazine has been a bi-weekly publication since its launch in March of 1998. The company issued a statement to The Sports Business Journal saying that consumer habits killed the magazine.
“Consumer habits are evolving rapidly, and this requires ESPN to evolve as well. The only change here is that we are moving away from printing it on paper and sending it in the mail. … Our data shows the vast majority of readers already consume our print journalism on digital platforms, and this approach will maximize our reach and impact.”
Last August ESPN folded the magazine’s subscriber base into ESPN+. Content from ESPN Insider and ESPN the Magazine becoming part of ESPN+ subscriptions made the magazine expendable.
