After twice being suspended during the Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball season, radio play-by-play voice Gary Dolphin is ready to make his broadcast return.
Dolphin’s official return to the airwaves will come April 24th, when the broadcaster hosts the Hawkeye Football Spring Practice Report. The April 24th broadcast marks the end of a two-month suspension, having been off-air since making an inappropriate analogy during an Iowa basketball game against the Maryland Terrapins.
“They (the Maryland Terrapins) had some pretty good long range shooting and then Fernando was King Kong at the end of the game,” said Dolphin who later issued an apology.
Earlier in the season, Dolphin was suspended for two games after the broadcaster didn’t realize his mic was live and proceeded to criticize Iowa men’s basketball junior, Maishe Dailey. Immediately after his first suspension, the Hawkeye football team named Dolphin the recipient if the 2018 Distinguished Service Award.
“Two months has seemed like two years,” Dolphin told the Des Moines Register as he gets set to make a return. “I’m excited and anxious to be alongside coach Ferentz talking spring football. I’m equally excited to interact with the great supportive fans and boosters of the Hawkeyes.”
During the April 24th spring football show, Dolphin will be joined by Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. Unfortunately for fans, field renovations at Kinnick Stadium will prevent Iowa from holding their spring football game.
