Much has been made regarding the possibility of DirecTV losing exclusive NFL distribution rights over the next few years. The loss of NFL Sunday Ticket would obviously be a huge blow to the satellite cable provider.
There’s no official word that the partnership will end following the upcoming season, but it was reported late last year that the NFL can opt out of the deal in 2019. Now, DirecTV has taken steps to dampen the expectations of their customers a bit.
In a message to subscribers, DirecTV explained the subscription and cancellation policy around Sunday Ticket including the phrase “Provided that DirecTV carries these services.”
That conditional language has never before been included in the terms of agreement with customers. DirecTV remains hopeful they’ll continue their current arrangement with the NFL, but is clearly attempting to get ahead of the issue should things go sideways.
