Legendary Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen added another piece of hardware to his trophy room and a line of distinguishment on his resume this week. The face of Dallas’ ABC affiliate, WFAA, received the RTDNF Lifetime Achievement Award in the nation’s capital last night.
In his nearly 40 years on the air, Hansen has not shied away from social issues when they present themselves in sports. He applauded Michael Sam for coming out before the draft, he’s repeatedly attacked Jerry Jones for his policy on signing questionable characters, and the Vietnam vet has even defended the choice of NFL players to kneel during the National Anthem.
In an era where it feels like our local news anchors matter less and less, Hansen stood tall as he accepted the award, acknowledging the importance of local journalists as an institution.
“We tell the truth. We report the facts and we expose the lies by speaking truth to power,” he declared. “What we do matters. What we do is too important to give up now.”
