Entercom announced a partnership with The University of Saint Joseph, a small DIII school in Connecticut which will have their men’s basketball games broadcast on Hartford’s 50,000 watt radio station, 1080 WITC-AM.
The University of Saint Joseph, not to be confused with Philadelphia’s St. Joseph’s University, is entering their inaugural season for men’s basketball. The state of Connecticut will have an added interest in the new program as three-time national champion and former head coach of the UConn Huskies, Jim Calhoun returns to the sideline to lead the Blue Jays.
“We are very excited to partner with the University of Saint Joseph and their newly announced men’s basketball program,” said Stephanie Perl, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, Entercom Hartford. “This partnership is an excellent opportunity to expand our sports offerings to our listeners on 1080 WTIC while complementing our already strong sports programming.”
For 26 years, WITC was the home for UConn basketball until the university, in conjunction with the IMG Radio Network, reached a 10-year multimillion dollar agreement to have iHeartMedia’s ESPN 97.9 serve as the school’s flagship radio station. The change in destination for Uconn’s radio broadcast also meant the end of play-by-play announcer Joe D’Ambrosio continuing as voice of the men’s basketball program. For 25 years, D’Ambrosio called Uconn basketball games and while iHeart was interested in working with him, WITC chose to retain the under-contract broadcaster.
D’Ambrosio will now serve as the radio voice for the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays men’s basketball team on WITC. The school’s partnership with Entercom is for one year. The team’s first game of the season is November 9th against William Paterson University.
