CBS and NBC Trade 2021 and 2022 Super Bowls

“The 2022 Winter Olympics seem to be the motivating factor in the deal. NBC wants to pair the Super Bowl with its coverage of the event, while CBS would like to avoid having to broadcast the Super Bowl against Olympics coverage.”

The media is getting in on the trade madness sweeping through the NFL right now. CBS and NBC have agreed to swap spots in the Super Bowl rotation for 2021 and 2022.

According to Andrew Marchand of The New York Post, NBC will step aside in 2021 and allow CBS to broadcast Super Bowl LV from Tampa. NBC will take the following year’s broadcast from CBS. That game will be played in the still-under-construction stadium that will be the future home of the LA Rams and LA Chargers.

The 2022 Winter Olympics seem to be the motivating factor in the deal. NBC wants to pair the Super Bowl with its coverage of the event, while CBS would like to avoid having to broadcast the Super Bowl against Olympics coverage. The 2022 games are scheduled to start February 4 of that year in Beijing.

NBC has president it can point to as motivating the deal. AdWeek estimates that last year the network generated $1.4 billion in revenue by pairing the Winter Olympics and the Super Bowl for advertisers.

2022 will present a new challenge for NBC though. In 2018 the Winter Olympics started in the week following the Super Bowl. In 2022, the games will start before the Super Bowl. That will put a strain on NBC talent. You may recall that Mike Tirico opted to skip the Super Bowl entirely in 2018 so that he could be in Pyeongchang.
