It is only January. The Super Bowl hasn’t even been played yet. Still, we may have already seen the strangest television commercial of the year. It aired last night on Golf Channel, and was promoting a golfer most people have never heard of.
Julio Bell, an amateur golfer from Columbia that calls himself “La Maquina,” purchased ad time on the network to promote his appearance in a pro-am event at the LPGA Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions. The ad he produced is absolutely spectacular. It’s shot in black and white, features an alligator, and shows La Maquina getting a hole in one with the help of some obvious CGI.
And again, this actually aired on TV! Here’s the proof.
Julio Bell has money and has a history of using it to further his golf career. Last year he came under scrutiny in the golf world for using a sponsor’s exemption to gain entry into a Web.com Tour event. Bell was accused of buying his way into the field. He finished in last place at that tournament.
