Gladiator, a podcast about the life and crimes of former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, has been optioned by FX. The network has the rights to develop the podcast, produced by The Boston Globe and Wondery, for television.
The show drew a lot of interest. At the time FX and Wondery made their deal official, Gladiator had been downloaded 4.5 million times. That made it the second most downloaded new podcast of the year according to Podtrac. It was only behind another Wondery production called Dr. Death.
Wondery is no stranger to TV deals for podcasts. The company co-produced the true crime podcast Dirty John, which has since been turned into a mini-series for Bravo starring Connie Britton and Eric Bana. Dr. Death is in development with Universal Cable Productions.
