Providence College, along with its multimedia rights holder Learfield Communications, agreed to a five-year contract with WPRO NewsTalk 99.7 and 630 AM to become the new radio home for Friar’s basketball.
“WPRO is a big part of the culture of radio in Rhode Island and Southeastern New England,” Providence College Men’s Basketball Coach Ed Cooley said. “I believe this will provide our fans the opportunity to get more coverage and access of Friar basketball. We are looking forward to hitting the airwaves on WPRO, the new home of Providence College men’s basketball.”
The Cumulus owned WPRO takes over for the Friar’s previous flagship station, Sports Radio 103.7 which is mostly a simulcast of Boston’s WEEI. As part of the new deal, WPRO will carry The Ed Cooley Radio Show on select weeknights during the season and longtime broadcasters John Rooke and Joe Hassett will continue to call Friar basketball as they’ve done for more than 30 years.
“Providence College is the premier Men’s College Basketball program in Southern New England,” said Cumulus Media Providence Market Manager Holly Paras. “We are so proud to have them return to the airwaves at NewsTalk 99.7 FM & AM 630 WPRO! We are enthused about the partnership and look forward to many great seasons of Friar Basketball.”
Since April 2017 WPRO has been airing sports every weeknight with longtime sports radio personality Andy Gresh hosting his show from 6-9PM. The addition of Providence men’s basketball further states WPRO’s commitment to offering sports to their listeners.
