Johnny Manziel would probably prefer to forget his first start in the CFL. The Heisman Trophy winner racked up four interceptions before halftime against his former Hamilton teammates. Manziel would be benched by the Montreal Alouettes for the second half.
People were paying attention though. Not only was Manziel’s performance all the buzz on Twitter, but according to Austin Karp of Sports Business Daily, it set a new ratings record for the CFL on ESPN2.
So @JManziel2 starting QB debut for Montreal Alouettes on Friday drew 406,000 viewers for ESPN2. Before that, top CFL game on The Deuce this season was 264,000. Two more Alouettes games on ESPN2 schedule: Aug. 18 and Oct. 28

It will be interesting to see if ESPN2 tries to find a way to get more Montreal football on to the CFL schedule. The network’s coverage of the CFL is tied to TSN’s Friday night broadcasts in Canada.
