For 26 years Mark Hauser served as the radio play-by-play announcer for Wofford University men’s basketball and football, but his tenure will come to a close after a contract dispute.
Like many schools, IMG College is in charge of Wofford’s multimedia rights offerings. Hauser, however, blames his break-up with Wofford on the school. “I understand IMG has a cap on expenditures,” Hauser said. “It comes down to whether Wofford wanted to take out any more money from its budget. In the end, for me, it’s Wofford’s call.”
Hauser was not fond of the way the negotiation was handled by the school, saying there was no negotiation. “That’s the most disappointing thing, at no point did anyone ever say, ‘Well, what would it take? What are you looking for?’ They didn’t ask if I wanted $5 more a game or $50 or $100. I might have shocked them. But it never even got off the ground for a negotiation. After this many years, I feel like I should’ve gotten a phone call from somebody to at least talk about it.”
Even with the lack of negotiation, it’s clear there remains a mutual interest to keep Hauser as the voice of Wofford University athletics. Sports information director Brent Williamson said Wofford would still be interested in bringing Hauser back, “if he wants to work for what he worked for last year.”
“It was an unbelievable relationship,” Williamson added. “We’re definitely going to miss him and we know our fans are going to miss him. But we’re going to do our best to find someone who can fill those shoes.”
