KRKO 1380AM and 95.3FM in Everett, WA officially flipped formats as of Monday, July 9th. The Seattle area radio station is no longer a Fox Sports affiliate having rebranded with music as, “Everett’s Greatest Hits.”
The switch for KRKO, which had been broadcasting an all-sports format for nearly 20 years, was rumored for weeks after its local afternoon sports show hosted by Jeff “The Fish” Aaron ended on June 27th. Aaron posted a video on KRKO’s Facebook page last week alluding to changes being on the way for the station.
KRKO management said the decision to switch formats was one that had the local audience in mind. “These changes and modifications, removing ourselves from the general umbrella of FOX, will once again allow us to focus with only the most local content possible. Under the FOX Sports model, we weren’t able to focus full time on being local. Now, we can do that,” explained GM Chuck Maylin.
The 50,000 watt station which is locally owned by S-R Broadcasting, Co. Inc. won’t completely abandon sports as they will retain broadcast rights to the Everett Silvertips, Everett AquaSox and continue coverage of local high school sports.
