DIRECTV is increasing the cost of its popular NFL Sunday Ticket package according to TVAnswerMan.com.
For the 2018 NFL season, DIRECTV has set the price of its basic Sunday Ticket package at $293.94. It’s a 4.2% increase from the 2017 cost of $281.94 and a 14% jump from the $257.94 price in 2016. The Sunday Ticket Max plan which adds the Red Zone Channel and Fantasy channel to the package increased 4.7% this year, from $377.94 up to $395.94.
The rise in cost comes after a second consecutive NFL season with declining television ratings and DIRECTV reportedly receiving numerous requests for refunds due to player protests during the national anthem.
DirecTV does not disclose how many of its customers subscribe to their NFL Sunday Ticket package, but Bloomberg estimates it’s 10% of the TV provider’s 20.8 million customers. Also not disclosed is how many of those customers requested and received a refund during last season.
In 2014 DIRECTV extended their contract with the NFL, paying $1.5 billion per year for eight years. With the TV provider controlling the Sunday Ticket they can continue increasing the price as long as fans will pay for their out-of-market games.
