The Players Tribune has struck a deal with DGital Media to create four to six podcast shows, with the first episode “Giant Steps,” being released on January 26th. The hour-long oral history of the 1986 Super Bowl-winning New York Giants football team is narrated by former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan and includes interviews with players and coaches from the 1986 team. The episode will be the first of at least four audio podcasts The Players Tribune delivers in 2017.
Jaymee Messler, president of The Players Tribune, also says the media platform will offer athletes an opportunity to tell their stories, and plans are in place to develop a Players Tribune-branded interview show, along with multiple athlete-hosted podcasts and other topical programs. All podcasts will be available on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher and TuneIn.
“Audio is a logical area to expand to because it “lends itself easily” to the type of content that The Players’ Tribune is known for”, said Messler. “There is an elevated, premium quality of storytelling that’s happening through podcasts, and we think we can emulate that for the sports category.”
DGital Media’s role in the process will include helping with distribution and sales, plus providing studio spaces across the country to record the podcasts. The digital company also has partnerships in place with Sports Illustrated, the UFC, Tony Kornheiser, and The Vertical, among others.
