WDAE in Tampa has made a surprising decision, dropping the local morning program “Rick and Tom”, hosted by Rick Stroud and Tom Jones. In its place is ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike”. The story was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times.
Stroud and Jones had occupied the morning timeslot on WDAE since May 2011. They had also signed two-year contract extensions this past May.
Sam Nein, president of iHeartMedia Tampa Bay, confirmed the news via text message. He said “Rick Stroud and Tom Jones are no longer part of the WDAE morning show. We appreciate all of their contributions during their time with us and wish them well.”
When reached for comment, Jones said “I cannot thank iHeart and WDAE enough for the opportunity they gave us. “I loved every second of it. I loved talking to Tampa Bay sports fans on a daily basis, and I loved working with Rick. I’m definitely going to miss it. Hopefully Rick and I get the chance to do it again some day.”
Added Stroud: “Tom and I had a blast doing the show. I know we developed a huge following in Tampa Bay and will miss sharing our mornings with all our listeners.”
Mike and Mike will take over starting Monday. Sources say that it’s possible WDAE will install another local morning show in the future but for now, the station will operate without one.
