Bill Simmons’ dislike for ESPN has been well documented. He’s shared his opinions on the worldwide leader on his podcasts, and on local radio. The most recent example was during a visit to Mike Francesa’s show on WFAN in New York.
But Simmons found a new way to spread his message, and this time it was on television in a very tongue-in-cheek, and entertaining fashion.
Give credit to Fox Sports 1 and Katie Nolan who’s show “Garbage Time” included an appearance by Simmons during a “Back To The Future” inspired segment. The feature is built around the idea that by going back in time, Simmons would’ve changed a few things in his career. Most notably, not signing with ESPN. This would’ve freed him up to host Nolan’s program, and speak out more freely about the ESPN network.
While he didn’t say anything new or offensive, his appearance on FS1 and humorous play off of his tension with his former employer, reminds us that the divide with ESPN remains strong. The fact that the message was delivered on television, shows that Simmons is going to maximize his opportunities to build his brand in the media, and not just rely on radio or podcasts to promote the problems he had with his former employer. The timing was also interesting considering the company had just laid off hundreds of employees.
