Nothing can be as special the fourth time around, and it seems like that is a lesson NBA fans know well. Ratings have been moderately down across the board for this year’s NBA Finals, but ABC so its lowest ratings for the fourth annual meeting of the Cavaliers and the Warriors on Friday night.
Game 4 averaged just an 11.2 overnight rating in metered households for game 4. It was easily the series’ lowest rated game. Ratings were down 12% from game 3. The number also represents an 11% drop from Game 4 of the 2017 NBA Finals. That game drew about 19 million viewers in 2017.
Overall, the first three games of the series averaged around 18 million viewers per night. It is expected that number will fall once the game 4 audience is averaged in.
Viewership for the series was likely down overall because of the feeling of inevitability that the Warriors would win combined with some LeBron vs the Warriors burn out. Game 4 probably saw an even more significant ratings drop for similar reasons, as the series felt like it was over after Game 2, but the fact that the game was on a Friday night cannot be discounted.
