ESPN’s Marty Smith, who signed a multi-year contract extension to remain with the network shortly after the New Year, will launch a podcast to be available on iTunes and ESPN Podcasts Monday March 19th.
Shortly after signing his new deal, Smith said, “my greatest passion is storytelling. There’s nowhere, as far as I’m concerned, in media, but certainly in sports, that compares to ESPN,” in an interview. The creative reporter will get to continue that passion for storytelling via his new podcast titled Marty Smith’s America…The Podcast.
“Marty’s unique voice and passion for storytelling and perfect for the one-on-one relationship between a podcast and the listener,” said Traug Keller, senior vice president, ESPN Audio. “We’re very happy to have him as part of our podcast lineup and look forward to hearing what he’ll bring each week.”
Each episode will be one-hour long, containing a feature interview and begin with a “Marty Party,” which will have Smith joined by different peers from ESPN. Smith’s first guest on March 19th is country music star Jason Aldean. Aldean, who is a big sports fan especially of the Georgia Bulldogs, previously sat down with Smith for a feature discussing his fandom.
In terms of ESPN’s transition to employ talent who are expected to show more personality in their reporting, rather than just statistics and numbers, Smith’s creativity fits the network perfectly and should be on full display in his new podcast.
