What if I told you, ESPN could reunite Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells? Last night ESPN released the trailer for “The Two Bills,” a 30 for 30 special about two of the greatest coaches in NFL history.
Prior to becoming the five-time Super Bowl winning head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick worked on Parcells’ staff during his time with the Giants, winning two Super Bowls. Following a disappointing tenure as head coach of the Browns, Belichick reunited with Parcells for one season with the Patriots and three with the Jets.
With Parcells stepping down as head coach of the Jets after the 1999 season, Belichick was introduced as his successor, only to infamously leave the organization with a sheet of loose leaf paper that read, “I resign as HC of the NYJ,” the very next day. The resignation brought to light a severed relationship between Belichick and Parcells, while igniting a rivalry between the Jets and Patriots.
The trailer teased interviews with Giant greats, Harry Carson and Lawrence Taylor. Taylor believes the Giants should have hired Belichick as their head coach instead of letting him go to Cleveland when Parcells left for New England. “Y’all should have worked that out!” said Taylor. Offensive coordinator and former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, as well as Patriots owner Robert Kraft were also seen during the one minute and 15 second clip.
The end of the video shows Belichick and Parcells sitting down at a table together, getting ready to do their interview. Directed by Ken Rodgers and produced by NFL Films, “The Two Bills” will premier during the winter.
