FOX Sports has confirmed Michael McCarthy of the Sporting News‘ report that former New York Giants running back, Tiki Barber, will be part of FOX’s week 4 game featuring his former team the Giants, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Barber will join his twin brother, Ronde, and the regular FOX team of play-by-play announcer Kenny Albert and sideline reporter Kristina Pink.
Tiki currently co-hosts “Tiki and Tierney” with Brandon Tierney on CBS Sports Radio. Since retirement, the former Giant hasn’t shied away from criticizing his former team, most notably his former quarterback, Eli Manning. With NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” in 2007, Barber described Eli’s casual approach to running a team meeting as “comical.”
This will be Tiki’s first time in the TV booth for an NFL broadcast. He was a highly sought after media personality during his playing days, but his stint at NBC was widely considered disappointing. After a failed attempt to return to the NFL in 2011, Tiki rebuilt his media image and has developed the successful post-retirement career that many expected.
The opportunity to have a former player from both the Giants and Bucs will create for a fun dynamic. A three man booth usually takes time to develop chemistry, but the unique situation of having twin brothers should help ease growing pains. It will be interesting to see if viewers struggle to decipher which twin is speaking since they have similar voices. The Giants-Buccaneers telecast will air on FOX, October 1st.
