If there’s one constant in sports talk radio it’s the weekly interview. From current and former players, analysts, insiders, play-by-play guys to local and national writers – the list goes on.
The NFL wrapped up another week following the Lions thrashing of the Giants on Monday Night Football and thus begins the weekly sports radio analysis. What better way to recap the weekend than bring on the people who cover the league on both a local and national level? The two types of guests in our profession are weekly recurring guests (who are likely being compensated for their time) and the people that producers book daily depending on the stories of the day/week.
Today, I decided to focus on the former and came across the extremely popular 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston. I listened to the very successful morning show Toucher & Rich and their weekly conversation with Boomer Esiason.
Every Monday morning, the show links up with the WFAN radio host and CBS/The NFL Today football analyst. It goes without saying that Boomer’s knowledge is well-respected and he’s never short on opinion, but he always manages to do it with a touch of class. Having Boomer on the air Monday mornings after NFL games is a massive draw for The Sports Hub.
When I dialed up the interview, I found that while the Patriots were an obvious topic after their bounce back week two victory in New Orleans, what excited me were the other topics that Fred and Rich dove into. At the time of this interview, Boomer had found out just one week earlier that his radio partner Craig Carton was arrested, leading to a mutual parting of the ways between Carton and WFAN. The radio station is now searching for Carton’s replacement.
Most shows wouldn’t touch that topic with Boomer but Toucher & Rich have good history with him. In fact, Boomer gave them his first public comments a week ago after the story initially broke. This is a great example of how a weekly/recurring interview can really pay off for a show as well as the radio station.
When you listen to the interview, be sure to pay attention to how the guys keep the sensitive topic light and funny, including how Fred needs to stop calling Boomer and asking for the job at WFAN. But although it has its funny moments, Toucher & Rich also aren’t afraid to bring the heat. They pepper Boomer with questions on topics that are no-nonsense and straight to the point including; his thoughts on Tony Romo’s pre-snap play prediction (any analyst can do it), how he thinks Phil Simms feels about Tony’s shtick, Jerry Jones “blocking” Roger Goodell’s contract extension and Marshawn Lynch dancing around on the sideline in Oakland.
When you mix the talent, name recognition and knowledge of Boomer Esiason with the talent, knowledge and humor of Toucher & Rich, Monday mornings on The Sports Hub become must-listen, appointment setting morning sports talk radio that all programmers dream of. All sports talk radio stations should do their best to make sure they have weekly interviews with talented and knowledgeable guests. They provide an appointment for your listeners, a tremendous sales opportunity and self-made content for the station that should be archived daily. But sorry Fred, my vote is to keep you right where you are in Boston.
