This week, Comcast introduced their internet based live streaming service, Xfinity Instant TV, for the cord cutting audience. In an attempt to prevent customers from cord cutting, Comcast partnered with CBS Sports Digital to launch a new fantasy football experience on XfinityX1.
X1 is a subsidiary of Comcast, combining live television with customized apps to create a total entertainment operating system. Their partnership with CBS Sports Digital will allow customers to access fantasy football scores and stats on their TV screen while watching live games.
Preston Smalley, Vice President of Product Management for Apps, Sports and Content, Comcast Cable told CBS:
“Until now, the millions of people in the U.S. who play fantasy sports would track their team’s progress on a separate device splitting their attention from the live play on TV. By putting everything on the same screen, we’ve created an experience that’s immersive, informative and complete.”
NFL ratings have slowly declined during the last year and one of the explanations is the growing popularity of fantasy football. Fans are more interested in how their fantasy football team is doing, rather than their local NFL team, sending them to digital platforms over traditional live television broadcasts. With X1’s fantasy football experience, fans no longer need to leave the game, or even use their phone to track player statistics.
Using the X1 Sports app, customers will easily have access to their fantasy team and stats for NFL players throughout the league. The live game broadcast will automatically resize, allowing fantasy information to appear on the right-hand side of the screen.
The partnership between Xfinity X1 and CBS Sports Digital is a creative way of modernizing traditional television. As fantasy sports’ popularity continues to grow, expect to see other cable companies offer similar experiences.
