Mike Francesa and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo weren’t expected to last 19 days together. Instead they went on to make sports radio history, becoming the #1 sports talk radio program in New York for 19 years on WFAN.
ESPN has been working on the highly anticipated 30 for 30 documentary about the New York sports radio hosts, and the company has confirmed that the film will premiere at the 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival on April 21st in New York City.
Although the show came to an end in 2008, both Francesa and Russo have appeared on one another’s shows from time to time. They also hosted a special one-night reunion program last March at Radio City Music Hall. Francesa continues to hosts afternoons on The Fan, which he says will come to an end this December when his contract expires. Russo remains hosting a daily national sports talk show on his own satellite radio channel “Mad Dog Sports Radio” for SiriusXM.
The film is expected to capture the duo’s love/hate relationship and show how the program grew from a train wreck into one of the most important and successful programs in the history of the sports talk format.
