Will ESPN lose another high profile member of its roster? According to Mike McCarthy of the Sporting News, NBA Insider Chris Broussard’s contract is expiring in a few weeks, right before the NBA season gets ready to tip off.
Broussard has been with ESPN since 2004 covering the NBA for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine. He also provides on-air reports from NBA games, and appears frequently on ESPN’s radio and television shows.
The real question is whether or not ESPN values him as much as other sports media groups might on the open market. He’s developed sources and broken numerous stories throughout his career, but he’s also been burned a few times, leading high profile people like Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban to call him out on social media for being inaccurate.
The other question that remains unanswered is whether Broussard wants to continue working as a reporter or transition into becoming a network personality. As we’ve seen over the past year, the money for polarizing personalities is increasing, and competing against Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical for NBA information is no day at the beach.
We’ll find out soon how this story plays out.
