Deadspin has acquired footage of Fox Sports 1’s rehearsals for its brand new television show “Speak For Yourself” featuring Colin Cowherd, Jason Whitlock, and Jason McIntyre. Clay Travis also appears during the tapings. To see the video click here.
It’s clear that Deadspin’s Tim Burke isn’t a fan of the personalities involved or FS1’s approach to programming. He refers to the show throughout the video as “All Takes Matter” and presents a very one sided narrative suggesting the show will be a disaster. To be fair, all new shows go through testing before hitting the airwaves. To paint the show as a mess while as a result of its off-air auditions is very unfair.
The bigger issue for Jamie Horowitz is figuring out which one of his employees is leaking footage to Deadspin. That has to be extremely disappointing for Cowherd, Whitlock, McIntyre and Horowitz because it makes it clear that someone inside the company is not on board with the show or the new approach. If that’s the case, that person should leave rather than deviously maneuver behind the scenes to make the company that signs their paycheck look bad.
I have no idea if the show will make any sort of an impact. The odds are not in their favor. Cowherd may have the ability to drive a good show and be part of a winning situation but the jury is still out on Whitlock and McIntyre. If the newly formed trio can come together, and the network gives the program time to develop, maybe we’re looking at things differently in 12-18 months. That’s usually how much time a new program needs in order to get a sense of whether or not it’s connecting.
Regardless of the time allotted for the show to make inroads, no program can succeed if people internally are taking steps to make it look bad. The sooner Horowitz and his executive staff figure out who the bad apple is, the better it will be for the health of the show.
