Hurney Lands National Show

Former Panthers general manager Marty Hurney, who has been in the radio business nine months, lands a national show next week.

Hurney and his partner Lanny Ford, who do “Inside the Lines” at 1 p.m. on WZGV-AM (ESPN 730), will expand their franchise to a 10 a.m. weekday show on Yahoo Sports Radio beginning Monday.

They will focus on national topics during the two-hour show on Yahoo, said Ford, and become more Carolina-centric on their local show.

Hurney, who has taken an ownership stake in ESPN 730 after becoming a co-host last June, quickly attracted attention on “Inside the Lines” for the quality of A-list guests and his business perspective, honed from a 20-year career in the front office.

“I have fun,” Hurney said Monday. “We can bring a different perspective.”

Ford and Hurney will follow another veteran Charlotte broadcaster on Yahoo Sports – Steve Czaban, who used to work for WFNZ-AM (“Fan” 610). He does the morning show on Yahoo from 6 to 10 a.m.

Yahoo’s shows can also be played back at will as podcasts.

Hurney, fired in October 2012 after the team started 1-5 in 2012, spent more than a decade as Panthers’ general manager. He has also worked as a guest analyst on ESPN’s “NFL Insiders” and was a sportswriter for The Washington Times before joining the Panthers’ personnel department in 1998.
