Alas, procrastination seems to be a habit these days. We neglected a few weeks ago to file a report on Houston sports radio for the Holiday book, which actually covers most of December, and now it’s been superseded by the January book released this week by Nielsen Audio.
So we’ll catch up on both books today. The Holiday book covered the period Dec. 4-31, during which time the Texans were 3-1 to wrap up the season, and the January book covers Jan. 1-28.
In general, sports radio rebounded nicely in January from the Holiday numbers, but remember that the Holiday book is inevitably skewed by the fact that KODA (99.1 FM) annually decimates the field with its holiday lineup of Christmas music. KODA is strong year-round, of course, but it’s even more prominent in the Christmas season, so a rebound for all stations in January is to be expected.
As always, we start with 6 a.m. to midnight among men 25-54, the key demographic for sports radio. KILT (610 AM) is back in the top 10 for January and up by a point in audience share from a year ago. KBME (790 AM) holds second place, and KFNC (97.5 FM) and KGOW (1560 AM) both show growth from year to year.
